So the other day, I was crunching the numbers. Numbers and I kind of get along - especially when it’s about money. Only tend to do it when I’m bored, but hey, I like to know where I stand. So I was trying to work out exactly where I stand on the next 4 months - now until part way through summer. I’m planning on taking January off, as well as going away for part of that time, and with Christmas and all that being an expensive time of year, I know I need to plan now so that I can make that all happen nicely.

But to rewind a little..

Those of you who know me, will probably know I’ve had one big, non-work related dream all year. All year, I’ve dreamed of changing cars, from the echo I have now (needed the practicality when I bought it, no longer necessary), to a convertible for the upcoming summer. Specifically, I was after an MX5. A joy to be in, beautifully styled, with a top down wind in your hair rush. Not too insanely costly either for a slightly used model. The dream image was simple:
1. Summer (undeniably better than winter, summer rocks)
2. Convertible (I love driving, and with the top down it’d’ be awesome)
3. 1+2 = yay

Point 2 in particular cannot be overstated enough. To me driving is the absolute parallel of freedom. Before I could drive, I lived in a world without physical freedom. It was hard to get anywhere, it made me very dependant on others, and overall not a great feeling, but a lifestyle I was used to at the time. The arrival of the car heralded a new era; where I could literally do what I wanted where I wanted - to go anywhere. Without driving I have no freedom, and I don’t see that mindset changing in the next few years. So to me, driving is extremely important. Thus I can personally justify going a bit further than need be with that side on the finances - my dream of having a convertible in summer wasn’t that far fetched..

The plan to get the car was likewise simple. This year I’ve worked my arse off on various freelance projects, and have done relatively well with them. Saving up for the car thus seemed like a perfectly achievable goal for december. Give some time to find one I want, sell my current car, and whatever change over delay - I was expecting to have it by January. So far so good, only a couple of months left of saving. Until part one of the problem emerged, the other day.. when crunching the numbers.

The next two months of this year wont be too costly. December will. January very much so. Plus, I wont be working in January, and I dont want to come back to work off debt if I can avoid it. That puts a decent bar up for the next three months of work. However, not a bar that plays well with what I have left to save on the car. Put simply, it’ll be very difficult to do both. It has to be one or the other..

Part two of my dilemma, is my second dream. The company I have been starting along with two other guys finally got its first client the other week. A small project, but a good start. As I truly believe this is my first preference for what I want to be spending my time on next year (full time job be damned!) I made it a priority that the rest of my time this year will have this as a number one focus. In fact, I only have one more freelance project in the pipeline (a *very* empty pipeline..) as a result, which is being done more out of love than pure dosh (cofa related, but not teaching related). So what does this mean? I dont have a whole lot of guaranteed income left this year. Car or all other expenses for 4 months, definitely one or the other now. The latter being much harder to.. live without.

Hence especially not enough freelance work to make the car dream come true.. while summer takes place. While I could possibly get it all done freelancing, it means more to me to really put a big shove into company work as we’re beginning to fire on all cylinders now, rather than follow the car dream. Unless of course the company churns out some dosh my way before the end of the year - then there would be a slim chance in it happening, but for business reasons its desirable not to pay me in full straight up, rather opting to invest that income back into the company to boost early growth.

I feel I’m doing the right thing, as I’m going after the long term better option than the short term. But its hard to give up something you thought was going to happen all year. Especially when you got so close. MX5, see you later in 07.. after summer.. after the summer dream.

One dream has been sacrificed for another…

Wow, how does time pass! And damn has a lot of time passed. I’ve been too wrapped up to blog lately, so lets quickly recap…

At some point, I finished season 5 of 24. Hotness! Season 6 will rock. Long wait till jan 06 tho

Played poker for the first time. Interesting. And yeah for money. Something I’m going to have to work on a lot though to become decent!

Surprise bday for fiona was last saturday, which was great! Totally well planned on my behalf and executed by hooj and myself ;) It was all under the pretense of dinner with the two of us and her, when surprise… everyone turned up in a lift. Moving the surprise away from the restaurant was key. Can’t reveal anymore, trade secrets, future plans, yada yada.

Work was fuckin intense. Saturday-Sunday I was meant to be working on a project for amnesty international, via digital eskimo (current place I’m freelancing for). Saturday turned into not a lot, and sunday-monday-tuesday suddenly became very very intense. At one point I’d worked 40hrs in 72hrs. Every shift was over 12hrs really, the top being 17hrs! Finally I was able to sleep all wednesday when it was over. I’m very happy with how it turned out, check it out: http://message.amnesty.org.au They were aiming for 10,000 signatures over the 11 days it was to be up - they got it in about a day. At the time of writing, its 15000+

Started teaching! Yep for those who don’t know UNSW picked me as a lecturer/tutor for a new course, intro to flash design. So every thursday I’ll be on the spot trying to teach people flash. First lesson went quite well. No difficulties in the talking aspect (think of it as a three hour presentation, only with no teacher to ‘throw back to’ - its just you), but keeping everyone entertained through difficulty of what you’re showing is tricky. An inherent problem in having some students with experience in flash, others without - we have to presume without. Roped Jason into it so he’ll be giving a few too, starting next week!

Was asked to guest speak for professional portfolio at cofa. Got that coming up in a few weeks. Talking about the uber success that is our ninjaman ;) (yeah, I like to brag about it lately lol. 25 million plays? more? dunno! :P)

Got my laptop at some point over these last few weeks. Loving being portable once more. Got the base level macbook, upped the HDD, and threw in 2gb ram after-market. Great to have a laptop feel as speedy as your desktop. Smaller than all my previous powerbooks too, which is nice. Great to take into work when freelancing - so it comes in handy. Certainly regularly used now.

Saw russell peters live a while ago. Fantastic!! Might go see him again in December when he comes back

Went and saw the sydney symphony the other night at the opera house - “Music in movies”. Tickets thanks to my pals at eskimo (for their/my work on symphony stuff lately). The finale was all about star wars - my god the star wars theme song sounds amazing when played live by a full orchestra. Totally the bomb! I’d never heared an orchestra live before… it was a bit dry until that, but very enjoyable ;)
And in uber-geek news, got my new phone!! Sony Ericsson K800, and I totally love it. Built in 3mp camea with xenon flash (lights up a pitch black room great - powerful). High res screen, 3g connectivity, got a bunch of russell peters clips on it for watching. Generally just much newer tech. Nice for me and great for R&D that I’ll be doing for my company! Oh and the K800 has built in integration with blogger.com - take a pic, click ‘blog this’, and up here it goes:

My new mobile blog for uploading photos to while out and about. Check it out. A slightly alien one of my cat currently ;)
That’s all for now - massive brain dump after a looong 2 weeks. Still more stuff I haven’t covered but will later. Started a massage course. Soon to start a public speaking course (peoples #1 most common fear be damned). Full time company work commencing next week (slowing freelance work right down). Lots going on, very busy, but still enjoying it!

May 25

One of those weeks where you feel like.. bleh.. no energy left. I’ve been cracking the whip working with the boys at my start up company ******** (blanked till we start up officially ;). Isometric rendering engines are a mindtrip to make. Plus now on the side I’m doing a splash of freelance work with a previous client, doing a little promo piece. This week has been a sudden jump out of the midday wakeup to ‘9-5′ concept work (realistically starting at 11, and ending at 11, due to breaks taken in the day and managing 2 gigs at once!).

Work progress is good, quite good, but it’s wearing me out like crazy trying to manage everything. It’s rough… looking forward to the weekend!

My sisters 16th tonight. Went out for dinner, teppanyaki, was pretty good! I caught most of what was thrown at me, minus one plate, which I’m happy to say met its fate on the ground, in two pieces. I got her a bunch of sex and the city dvds.. and had a hand in the ipod nano she got. Now I have ipod jealousy, my third gen black-and-white-screen 20gb iPod just isn’t cutting it anymore for hawtness. Still works fine though hahaha.

I want one of these, bad. Maybe when this work is done. Within a month I hope :(

May 14

This has been a great past half week, primarily due to the amount of successful distractions I’ve had! Seems like every night I’ve managed to be out somewhere with people, usually around food, and away from the Dungeon Of Pain that has become of the daytime.

Thursday night… dinner at GPK. Congrats to Fi and Hooj for their current work placements, if even only temporary, is a great step forward. Good dinner celebrating that!

Friday night… late as dessert at Maisys. A great catch up, and surprisingly good sticky date pudding! Late night.

Saturday night… saw V for Vendetta finally, it rocked. Fantastic 1984-esque theme, and retained brilliance all the way through. After that, food again at big fish little fish… again surprisingly good coffee - last time there it was flavoured water - tonight it actually tasted like coffee! Anyhow another fun night, another good catch up.

What do all these events have in common? No alcohol. Hah, well that’ll be fixed later.. but.. they have all been a great distraction from my ‘day job’… which I run away from at every opportunity right now. I’m currently spending my days diving right into OOP in flash (actionscript 2, object orientated programming, joys) and while quite uber cool (and not new - ninjaman was very OOP-ish in an as1 way), it does my head in diving in so quickly. So I enjoy time away, haha!

In case you were wondering (and as I haven’t finished putting up all the sections on this site), what… do I actually do for work. Well, three things.
1. ********* games, a start-up studio I’m helping to found. This has been a bit lax as our CO has been overseas the past few weeks, so I’ve taken time out to bone up on new hotness (as2 - stuff I should have learned long ago). Everything relating to this is really exciting, and really pushes me to think outside of what I’m used to. Also gives a sense of ‘things rely on you a bit sonny’ when we’re planning, discussing, communicating with others outside of the studio, etc. My year will revolve heavily around this, so look out for some shit-hot stuff from us ;) 2. Freelancing gigs. What effectively is the money right now. First there a bit of work with switch.tv, then jonohennessy.com, both of which were fun and different projects. The latter looks to be flowing on to further freelance work, which is great.
3. The final prong. Went for an interview at digital eskimo after the creative director there contacted me, unbeknownst to me for a full time position. Upon knowing that’s.. simply not possible for me particularly with commitment 1, we’re evaluating potential freelance or part time stuff, depending on if I want to do flash or flash+html+css. Browser incompatibilities suck so… I’m leaning towards the former..

Anyhow, that is the state of my day life. For some reason it involves me driving around to lots of people often, I feel like a door to door salesman at times. The getting out is fun, the finding time to DO stuff can be difficult! So a final ho-rah weekend and back to the hecticness on Monday. Looks to be hotting up on all three fronts come monday..

I (heart) Distractions, for a limited time only!

Oh, and check out this months cofa magazine - apparently I’m in it, along with Jason and Johnny - the ninjaman crew - with a half page article on us/ninja/hotness. Cool! I’ll post a scan of it when I get a copy.
